Personal Essay on Why Do I Come School?
A school is a place where learning takes place. Therefore, the obvious reason as to why a person goes to school is to learn. But what is learning? Learning is a term that means different thing to different people. However, a unifying definition for learning is the acquisition of new ideas which is aimed at transforming or changing our perception of the world that we experience. Here, there is the concept of new ideas, meaning that learning implies newness. You don’t learn the same thing everyday. You only say you have learnt something if it is new. Then there is the idea of transforming life. This means that the knowledge that we get as we learn should change us. How we perceive life should actually change after we have learnt.
There are many reasons as to why I go to school. A school, other that just the learning activities, has got several other activities which its goers participate in and result in their overall personality development.
Apart from learning, I go to school to socialize. Human beings are social animals by nature and in our environment, w interact with the people and the objects so that we change our attitude and behavior. The interaction that I get from school is both formal and informal. Formally, I interact with the teachers and other people like the neighboring community. For this kind of interaction, I remain very formal in the language that I use and I occupy the lower cadre in the communication process. In the informal interaction, I interact with friends who are my fellow classmates of the same age group. We interact informally both in class and out of the class.
I also come to school to transform behavior. Schools are places that instill discipline in the learners by teaching them good behavior. When I make mistakes in school, I receive punishment and this teaches me to correct my unwanted behavior. I also correct behavior through friends who raise comments when I do wrong things or praise me when I do the correct things. There are friends or class mates of good conduct whom I emulate and learn the good behavior from. I also have role models in teachers whose conduct I admire.
Furthermore, I go to school to gain skills that will assist me professionally. I would like to be a doctor for example. But I will not be the doctor or the lawyer if I don’t go to school. I have to visit school, learn and pass my exams well to be the doctor or lawyer I would like to be. The society measure our success in life on the basis of how learned we are and for you to be “a somebody” in the society, you must have gone to school. Therefore, we also go to school to be judged fairly by the society.
There is also the pride that arrives with good education. Learned people are very proud of themselves for having achieved their dreams. I would also like to be proud of having achieved my dream of becoming a doctor and I will also be proud even of the mere fact that I am a learned person. This will determine how my society will judge which maters a lot. The reasons as to why I go to school are numerous and the list is just endless.
